A Second Chance

Read John 7:53-8:11.

“’Then neither do I condemn you,’ Jesus declared. ‘Go now and leave your life of sin’” (v. 8:11).

Mike Bobo needed a chance for redemption. He got it in one of the most spectacular Bulldog wins of all time. Bobo, whom Mark Richt named his offensive coordinator in December 2006, is one of Georgia’s greatest quarterbacks, ranking first, second, or third in seven different offensive categories. He started the first nine games in 1996, his junior year, but the season came unraveled, and the Dogs limped into Auburn only 3-5. Bobo was benched.

Georgia was thoroughly whipped most of the game, trailing 28-7 before Bobo got a second chance and led one of the greatest comebacks in UGA history. The Dogs scored three touchdowns in the fourth quarter, the last coming when Bobo hit Corey Allen with a 31-yard pass as time ran out. Thus began the SEC’s first overtime game. Torin Kirtsey scored on a one-yard run in the fourth overtime, and then Jason Ferguson and Brandon Tolbert stopped the Auburn quarterback short on fourth and three. The Dogs had a 56-49 win. Bobo had a spectacular game, completing 21 of 37 passes for 360 yards and two touchdowns, a 67-yarder to Hines Ward and the stunner to Allen. Ward called him “the rejuvenated Bobo.” “It’s the best feeling I’ve ever had,” Bobo said, “the biggest win of my life.” Mike Bobo achieved his redemption.

Second chances. Mulligans. It's a shame life doesn't emulate golf and give us a do-over now and then. If you could go back and repair that relationship that meant so much to you, wouldn't you? If you got a second chance to take that job you passed up, wouldn't you? If you got another try at going out with that dream date, wouldn't you? God is a God of second chances -- and third chances and fourth chances. No matter how many mistakes you make -- and we all make a bunch -- God will never give up on you.

Things could be worse. Suppose your errors were counted and published every day, like those of a baseball player. -- Source Unknown

Even though you keep making mistakes, God never gives up on you.
